Abstract: "In the United States today, people are quarreling over the humanities. They disagree about what the humanities are and what the humanities should be. Some say the humanities are a citadel of political correctness where students are more apt to watch Homer Simpson than to read Homer. Others say the humanities are in a period of creative ferment that we neglect at our peril. “Great Traditions and Great Reforms” will assess this mess but argue for the creativity of the humanities today."

Catharine R. Stimpson became Dean of New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science in January 1998 after directing the MacArthur Foundation Fellows program for four years. She has authored a novel, books on feminism and the work of Gertrude Stein, and over 150 monographs, essays, stories and reviews in publications like The Nation and The New York Times Book Review. Stimpson has won Fulbright and Rockefeller Humanities Fellowships and was educated at Bryn Mawr College; Newnham College, Cambridge; and Columbia University.
