| Abstract: | The shift from acute infectious and deficiency diseases to chronic noncommunicable diseases is not a simple transition but a complex and dynamic epidemiological process, with some diseases disappearing and others appearing or reemerging. The unabated pandemic of childhood and adulthood obesity and concomitant comorbidities are affecting both rich and poor nations, while infectious diseases remain an important public health problem, particularly in developing countries.
Nicholas Mascie-Taylor has been teaching at the University of Cambridge for over 30 years and is currently Professor of Human Population Biology and Health in the Department of Biological Anthropology. He was made a Fellow of the Institute of Biology in 1990 and was awarded The Rivers Memorial Medal of The Royal Anthropological Institute the same year. He has been editor of the Journal of Biosocial Science since 1990 and is founding editor of the series Studies in Biological Anthropology published by Cambridge University Press. |
