Abstract: The paper describes joint work with Leigh Shaw-Tylor to estimate the male occupational structure of London 1700-1750 deriving from te marriage registers of the Fleet Prison and parish registers. These results are compared with datasets deriving from parish registers 1813-20 and later published census tabulations. One major finding is that throughout the eighteenth and ninetneenth centturies London's male occupational structure, in terms of labour force shares, was shifting away from the secondary sector to the tertiary sector. Note however, that the coninous population growth of London means that the absolute level of secondary sector employment was not declining.
