Abstract: Specialist teacher Jane Bower discusses with the children at Abbey Meadows Primary School what they should take with them on their voyage from Denmark to their new home in England. She and the children discuss their need for blankets to keep them warm in the ship, for food and water, for weapons and whether to take their flock of sheep with them.
Transcript
Transcript:
Jane: Maybe some of you women could be weaving a blanket.

The children (together, starting to get up): I'll do it.

Jane: Right, we need to do that. We must be warm on the ship. And food, we'll need to take food with us.

Boy: Food, Food.

Jane: Women, you see to the blankets, and men, you must go and get food.

Jane (to group of three girls): And then take milk, take some milk, but also butter and cheese. That would be useful.

Jane (to Boy): Eighteen [in response to the question how many sheep he has]? But what about the other families' [sheep] -- where are we going to store them? Is the ship big enough for all that flock? (Boy nods.) Are you sure? Very well.

Jane: What have we decided to take with you?

Boy: Well, I, we are going to take bread that Matila has made.

Jane: And some some water. That is essential.

Boy: Yeah, and water. And the weapons. I will take some weapons, too.

Jane: You know, Brusi, you've been good to me, you've been a good leader and advisor to me. Some of the men are saying to me that they want to take the whole of their flock of sheep on the ship. I mean some of them are too big. Surely we'll have to leave some behind. What should we do?

Boy: If they're... we should, but the sheep, they can't stay in the village by themselves.

Jane: No, no, they can't. So what are we going to do with the animals we leave behind?
