Abstract: What does the Master of a college actually do? This is a question often asked by both current students and alumni. For the role is inextricably grounded in a mythology still retailed in literature, film and the media. The lecture will explore the extent to which the modern expectations placed on a ‘Head of House’ correspond to those of the popular imagination.

Professor Robert Lethbridge’s first academic post was as Leathersellers' Teaching Fellow in French at Fitzwilliam College. He was Senior Tutor for the decade 1982-92, and was Master of Fitzwilliam College from October 2005 - September 2013. He has also been Provost of the Gates Cambridge Trust since October 2010.
