Abstract: | 'Take me out of the woods' by Kate Honey received its world premiere at Madingley Hall on 11 March 2012, where it was performed by the wind quintet, Ragbo, alongside works by Beethoven and Ligeti. The title is a reference to a certain pastoral style of composition which the composer felt she had got stuck in, and wished to escape from. So in this piece pastoral lyricism is rudely interrupted, as though being told to shut up. The pastoral themes carry on unabashed. The bassoon theme is a reference to an earlier (rather pastoral) composition about King Charles I, entitled 'Childhood’s Sunlit Glade'. |
