Abstract: A film, produced by Pete Cook and Brian Ashbee, which summarises the results of this major AHRC-funded research project in an accessible, engaging fashion. The research was undertaken by a team from Cambridge and Salford universities. Narrated by Timothy West CBE, the film explores the design and delivery of recent UK theatres, including the Contact, Manchester; the Lowry, Salford; Poole Arts Centre; Curve, Leicester; and the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. Those involved in the process at each theatre present their experience, and some strategies for success are suggested. The film accompanies the book of the project, 'Geometry and Atmosphere: theatre buildings from vision to reality', published by Gower Ashgate in summer 2011. The book, like the film, acts as a resource on which those commissioning, designing and funding major arts buildings, or public buildings generally, may draw.
