Abstract: | We consider decaying rotating turbulence at a Rosby number of around unity. We show that the large-scale columnar structures so evident in many experiments and some simulations are created by linear wave propagation and not the result of triad interactions. We also discuss the reasons for the predominance of cyclones, and the mechanisms by which anisotopy feeds down to the small scales.
