Abstract: | The congruent number problem is the oldest unsolved major problem in number theory, with its written history going back over 1000 years. It has played a pivotal role in the evolution of diophantine geometry. In particular, it led Fermat to conjecture his "last theorem", and it also contains the first striking, and still unproven, example of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. My lecture will recall the history, and discuss some recent work on the problem.
