Abstract: | We present two general stability/instability criteria for nonlinear waves in Hamiltonian or reversible systems. Both criteria rely upon spectral properties of the linear operators found by linearizing the system at a given wave. We apply these results to some model equations arising in water-wave problems. The focus is on the question of transverse stability/instability of periodic traveling waves. |
