| Abstract: | This talk will be informed by my experience as a criminal trial lawyer, and will look at some of the issues that arise when probability and statistical methods are used in the trial process. I will focus particularly on the rapidly developing area of DNA analysis, and of the challenges that are presented by complex mixed profiles and of the statistics generated. Given the power that juries tend to attach to such evidence, I will suggest that there is a heightened need for clarity and transparency, as well as objective validation of new types of modelling. |
