Abstract: We will analyze the asymptotic behavior of a two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model for gradient fields. The main feature of the model consists in the nucleation of line-defects on which the energy concentrates. We develop the concept of entropies coming from scalar conservation laws in order to carry on the asymptotic analysis and to characterize the limit line-energies. We will also discuss the structure of minimizing configurations.
