Abstract: Networks and other forms of "big data" present practical and theoretical challenges to modern statistics. From Facebook's graph search to large-scale recommender systems like Amazon's, how do we model mathematical objects that describe relationships and interactions rather than points in space? In this talk I will share research perspectives on this question and its implications for modern mathematics, statistics, and computing, from the points of view of both academic researchers and industrial users.
